What is the difference between a manual breast pump and an electric breast pump?

There are two broad types of breast pump in the market – the manual ones versus the electric ones. If you’re a soon to be first-time mom, it may be slightly daunting when you’re purchasing your first breast pump. We explain the different pumps below.

Manual Breast Pump

A manual breast pump, as its name suggests, means that you’d need to use your hand’s effort to operate it manually. There are two types of manual breast pumps – the handle pumps and the suction pumps.

A handle manual breast pump looks like most electric pumps. There is a flange, which you position it at your nipple, a handle which is attached below the flange for you to squeeze, a connector, which secures the flange onto the milk container, and some valves and membranes, which work to prevent the breast milk from reversing back into the flange. The handle breast pump works by squeezing the handle repeatedly to pump out the milk.

On the other hand, a suction manual breast pump is made entirely of silicone and looks somewhat like a vase with a pear-shaped body. It’s just one single piece and absolutely no assembling is required.

Electric Breast Pump

An electric breast pump looks totally like a handle manual breast pump. It has got a flange, a connector with valves and membranes and a milk container. However, there is typically an extra tube and a pump, be it battery-powered or electricity-powered. The pump also usually comes with some buttons or switch so that you can select the intensity of the suction.

Some electric pumps also come with customisation of the suction patterns. This means that you can select a mode that resembles the way your baby nurses, such as the “let-down” phase which helps to slowly stimulate your nipple to start releasing milk and the “expression” phase when the milk gets released.

Last but not least, electric breast pumps can come in single or double plumping options. The single option means extracting milk from one breast first, then the other, whereas the double option allows you to extract milk simultaneously from both breasts at one go.

Should I get a manual breast pump or electric breast pump?

With the glut of choices in the market and all of them looking somewhat alike, save for some slight variations, you may find yourself mulling over which breast pump to get. Fret not, you just need to take note of the pros and cons below. It is also easier if you think about what kind of situation you would likely find yourself in – whether you’d be a stay-home mom or a mom-on-the-go who’s returning back to work.

Manual Breast Pump

The most obvious difference (and likely an advantage) is that manual breast pumps cost less than an electric one. The prices of manual breast pumps could be at least three times less costly than the electric ones, and this could be the biggest contributing factor when considering which type to purchase.

Using a manual breast pump also gives you more flexibility. For one, you won’t have to look for an electrical outlet to operate the breast pump or ensure that you have enough battery charged up for the full duration of the milk extraction. Manual breast pumps tend to be more compact and more suitable for being on the go. There are fewer parts to carry and especially without the relatively bulky electric motor!

When using a manual breast pump, as it is powered by your hand, there isn’t that externality of noise that would have been generated from an electric motor. As you are operating it manually, you have more control over the comfort level and expression speed of the pump.

Electric Breast Pump

The reason why electric breast pumps are so popular despite its hefty price tag is that they are super efficient and can pump milk out quickly without much effort required on your part. This could be highly critical if you’re a mom returning to work and can’t be away from your desk for too long a period.

You may have read that electric breast pumps could be painful or highly uncomfortable to use as they may attempt to proceed to extract milk immediately, which could prove to be highly futile. Electric breast pumps nowadays come with customisable suction and cycle levels and can mimic both “let down” and “expression” phases. This means that you’d have more control over the comfort and speed of the pump and you can prepare yourself gradually for pumping milk!

While an electric breast pump comes with additional parts and a motor or battery outlet, you’d be surprised at how light the whole assembly can be these days! If the price is not the top consideration, you might be better off getting an electric breast pump!

How to use an electric breast pump

  1. Before using the breast pump, you should always ensure that you have washed and sanitised your hands. You should also massage both breasts to start stimulating them for better extraction later.
  2. Assemble your breast pump system by fixing the parts together and connecting the tube from the flange to the motor. Ensure that the lid is closed properly to prevent spillage.
  3. Once assembled, fit the flange to your breast and select the stimulation phase and opt for a lower suction level first. Slowly increase this suction to a comfortable level to set the vacuum in the flange. If you have a free hand, you can further squeeze your breast softly and let go to get the milk flow started.
  4. Once your milk starts trickling, switch to the let-down phase to allow the milk to flow easily. You can also massage your breasts again but focus on areas that feel fuller.
  5. Finish off by using your hand to squeeze your breast to drain and empty it. You could also switch to a manual breast pump to do so, whichever you prefer and can express the most milk possible.

How to use a manual breast pump

  1. After ensuring your hands are clean and sanitized, likewise, you can start massaging your breasts to begin stimulating the milk flow.
  2. Assemble the manual breast pump (if required) and place the breast shield on your breast. You should ensure that the shield is positioned over the nipple and in the centre.
  3. Begin squeezing the bottle or handle to start stimulating your breast. It may take a few minutes before the milk starts flowing. You can also readjust the breast shield and recreate the vacuum periodically to create a better suction force for higher milk yield.
  4. You can switch between your breasts in 5-min intervals but do ensure that each side gets a total of 15 minutes of stimulation. You can also massage your breast in areas that feel fuller to increase your milk yield.
  5. Breast milk is safe for about 4 to 6 hours at room temperature. However, it is advisable to keep it refrigerated immediately. This can be kept for up to 5 days. However, if you want to keep the milk safely for a longer period of time i.e. 6 to 12 months, you should store it in the freezer.
