Garment steamer vs steam iron
Choosing between a garment steamer and steam iron boils down to the type of clothes you usually handle. Garment steamers are more optimised for fabrics of a more delicate nature, like silk, suede, chiffon. Irons come in handy when your fabrics of made from heavier material like jeans and you need to press or get a sharp crease down the centre of your pants.
But like we say, it’s good to have both garment steamer and steam iron at home because they’re complementary, and can come in handy when the occasion calls for either one.
Fabrics and clothing suitable for garment steaming
Steaming is a delicate form of removing creases. Most fabrics and clothes can definitely be steamed. These include cotton, silk, wool and polyesters. However, you should definitely refrain from steaming any waxed fabric or materials that may melt, like plastic. For such fabric, if you really do have to steam, you should try steaming it from inside out instead. But do at your own risk!
Upright vs handheld garment steamers
Both are designed to serve the same purpose of removing creases and ensuring your clothes are straight. There are some differences though!
Upright garment steamers are usually more suitable for home and commercial use. These garment steamers comes with a water tank, which usually lasts for the entire steaming session. You will hardly find yourself having to refill halfway. Some upright garment steamers also come with a surface-like board and can support horizontal and vertical steaming!
They also typically come with more functions, like steam and heat control settings and interchangeable heads. These features make for more versatile ironing across different kinds of fabrics! The downside – or at least the limitation is that they are not that portable. You probably won’t fancy bringing an upright garment steamer overseas!
On the other hand, handheld garment steamers are very portable. They can be used on the go or if your clothes need a quick refresh. With a smaller water tank, you may need to refill the water in between fabrics, but they also take less time to heat up for use. But if you’re looking to steam a whole basket of laundry, you’d probably find yourself having to refill the water tank constantly.
How to use a garment steamer
Using a garment steamer is as easy as filling the water tank with water and allowing it to heat up. Once it starts to emit steam, it’s ready for use. Simple as that! For best results, you should hang your garment when steaming for best results.
Do remember that you should always to check the care label on your fabric on whether it can be steamed. If not, you could check by placing the steamer at a corner of your fabric.
Are you still unsure about which garment steamer to go for? Here are our TOP recommendations again! If you choose one of them, you definitely won’t be disappointed.
