There is always one question when buying or replacing a water heater. Should I buy an instant or storage water heater? Not to worry, let us walk you through the pros and cons of each of them depending on your needs and preferences. After reading, the choice should be clear.
Water temperature and time taken
Instant or also known tankless water heaters are like what their name suggests. Once you turn it on, you’ll be able to enjoy a hot bath within seconds. It will not run out of hot water as long as you keep it on. As the water passes through it, the heating element inside will instantly warm it to the temperatures you want. If you don’t like to wait, an instant water heater is the way to go.
Storage water heaters take time to heat up the water in their tank. Depending on the model, its capacity and how powerful it is, it could range from around 10 to 20 minutes. While you have to wait longer, it does have one advantage in terms of water temperature. It can reach much higher temperatures. If you like very warm baths or need to fill a bathtub, choose a storage water heater.
Water pressure
If you like the feeling of strong water pressure, then go for a storage water heater. Water enters the heater at around 10 litres per minute and is pushed out at a similar intensity. The strong pressure is suitable especially for rain showers. If your storage heater is connected to multiple bathrooms, water pressure may drop when more than one is being used. However, the water pressure is still stronger than an average instant water heater.
Comparatively, the water pressure from an instant water heater is weaker. The water passing through the heater is slowed down so that it has time to be sufficiently heated before being pumped out. As a result, the water pressure is halved. Still, most users will not have any complaints about the water pressure as it is good enough for a satisfying bath.
Some instant water heaters come with a booster pump which helps increase the water pressure. However, this method may be illegal in HDBs if it draws water pressure away from your neighbours. Therefore do check with the seller and HDB before committing to an instant water heater with a pump.
Price
On average, the prices of instant and storage water heaters are pretty similar if you take into account both the water heater and installation costs. On average, most families have 2 bathrooms. They would need 2 instant water heaters which cost around $300 to $450. With installation, the total cost would be about $500 to $600.
If they get a storage water heater, that would cost around $250 to $400. After adding in installation, the cost would also be in the $500 to $600 ballpark.
However, if you are on a tight budget, you should choose an instant water heater. There are lower-end models which cost around $80 to $100. In comparison, storage water heaters have a higher average price with fewer budget-friendly models.
Energy consumption and cost
The short answer is that storage water heaters consume more energy than tankless water heaters. Whenever you turn on the storage water heater, it heats up a large quantity of water. Usually, you will not finish up the entire supply of heated water. That means some energy is wasted in the process.
Instant water heaters are only switched on right before you want to take a bath. It does not need to preheat a whole tank of water. It only heats the water when it passes through. As such, they are much more energy efficient.
On average, storage water heaters use about 1.5 to 2 times more electricity than tankless water heaters.

For new installation and changing of systems (eg. storage to instant), the process is more complicated and costs more.
An instant water heater is the simplest and quickest to install. The main reason is that you do not need to lay new water pipes to other bathrooms. A storage water heater is harder to install. You need to lay new water pipes and install a holder near the ceiling to hold the system in place.
