Why Do We Need a Power Bank?
Smartphones are arguably one of the most impactful innovation within the personal device category in the 21st century. They combine your phone, camera, mp3 or cd player and many more in one lightweight device. Most of us are probably in more than a dozen Whatsapp groups and receive thousands if not hundreds of messages, videos and pictures each and every day.
The fast processing power of the smartphone has also made it popular among gamers. You can play games like angry birds or even more fast-paced shooter games like Fortnite or PUBG mobile. However, the more you do with your phone, the faster the battery drains. This is especially so when you are on the move constantly and do not have access to a power point!
When you see the dreaded low battery warning on your iPhone or Samsung phone, it feels like your world is crashing. How are you going to game with your squad?! How can you use the Mobike or ofo app to get a bike?! How can you call a GrabCar?!
If you noticed, our phones and tablets’ battery lives have not increased much despite new versions coming out every year. Although phone manufacturers try to make battery improvements, the increased processing power, camera, functions will continue to take up more battery life. Batteries also need to be kept small and light because we expect our phones to be slim and fit nicely in our pocket. Simply put, a power bank is one of the essentials accessories for our smartphone generation!
Things to Know Before Buying a Power Bank
Before getting any power bank, there are some factors you should consider so that you can choose the right one for your phone, usage patterns and habits. Here are what you should look out for.
What is the capacity of my smartphone’s battery?
Knowing how much juice your smartphone needs is important as it will help to determine what power bank capacity you need. Let’s take a look at two of the most popular phones in the market right now, the Apple iPhone and Samsung S9.
The iPhone has a battery capacity of 2716mAh while the Galaxy S9 has a 3000mAh capacity. What we usually use as a gauge is 2.5 times the battery capacity to be able to charge the phone at least twice before the power bank needs to be recharged. Why 2.5 times instead of 2?
That is because when you charge anything there is a loss of energy during the transfer process due to inefficiency. But if you want to future proof yourself with the smartphone’s constant increasing battery capacity, go for at least a 20000maH power bank.
Should I get a small or large power bank?
That depends on how much additional battery you need on a daily basis. For instance, if you find that your smartphone or tablet can last almost ¾ of your day. Perhaps, you would only need a smaller power bank to sustain your battery. However, if you find that your phone runs out of battery even before half the day has gone past, you will definitely need a larger power bank.
Another consideration is, how many devices do you usually need to charge concurrently? If you have both a smartphone and a tablet that requires charging, a larger power bank may be more suitable for you as it would likely have 2 or more charging ports. A larger power bank will also have a larger capacity and be able to charge both devices sufficiently.
Quick Charging and Fast Charging – The Future
With the larger batteries that phones have nowadays, it would mean that it takes much longer to get a full charge. Older power banks usually charge with a 1A current. However, for newer power bank models, we would recommend a 2.4A charge rate for quicker charging.
Additionally, Quick charging or Fast Charging is the future for most smartphones as most new Android and Apple phones are starting to support it. We would definitely recommend you to get a power bank that supports quick charging. With Qualcomm’s Quick Charge 4, they are promising 5 for 5 charging, meaning that if you charge for just 5 minutes, you can get up to 5 hours of battery life. This means you won’t have to keep your phone connected to the power bank for long.
How fast can I charge my power bank?
The larger the capacity of the power bank also means charging it may take a longer time. You would not want to need to charge for power bank for 12 hours every day as it would defeat the purpose of it being a convenient source of external battery power. We would recommend that you go for a power bank that enables charging at more 1.5A / 5V.
Additionally, some power banks do not come with a charger as they may expect you to use your own wall USB charger. However, do not use an old charger for it as it may result in dreadfully slow charging rates. Also, try not to charge your power bank through a computer or laptop USB port as it will likely be much slower than through a wall charger.
For the larger power banks with more than 20000mAh, consider power banks that support Quick Charge for their input charging. This will drastically reduce the charging time and allow you to leave the house with a full power bank every single day!
Price vs Quality – Should I go for the cheapest power bank?
No. A power bank is a very useful product that can last at least 2 years if it is well taken care of. However, it can also be a dangerous product when its build quality is questionable. I am sure you have heard of power banks or phones exploding when they are overheated. While most power banks should not face this issue, this risk should not be taken lightly, especially since the power bank is usually placed in our pocket or bag. Even when it is charging at home, a burning power bank could lead to a house fire. It would be very dangerous if something does go wrong.
Therefore, we definitely recommend going for more reputable brands. If you see a great offer for a high capacity power bank at a price that is too low to believe, definitely look deeper into it. Go for more reputable brands like Xiaomi or Anker and most importantly, check out our review and also other customer reviews on the shopping site you are buying from!
