Inkjet vs laser printer
The first decision you’ll have to make is whether you want an inkjet or laser printer. There are pros and cons to each of them, although we would say that laser printers are the more popular option nowadays. Let us go through their pros and cons so that you can decide better.
Laser printers are super fast compared to inkjet printers. For a black and white text document, they can print up to an average of 18 pages in one minute. Inkjet printers are slower, and the average printing speed is about half, 9 pages in one minute. If speed is your main consideration, then you’ll want a laser printer.
Inkjet printers are better if you want to print photos, text and images. But that is only true if you get a mid to high-end one. If you get the cheapest inkjet printer, its print quality will not be as good. Laser printers produce high-quality text documents but are generally bad at photos and images.
Laser printers are more economical than inkjet printers if you only plan to print documents. Each page will cost you less than 4 cents on average, much cheaper than going to a print shop. Laser cartridges are priced at about $80 and can print about 2000 pages before needing a refill. Inkjet printers tend to cost you close to 10 cents per page for black and white documents.
In terms of initial cost, inkjet printers are slightly cheaper than laser printers. However, the price of laser printers has been dropping in recent years. Therefore, you can get a very decent laser printer for less than $100 now.
Overall, we are huge fans of laser printers because of their speed and economical printing. However, that is only true if you plan to print black and white text documents most of the time. If you want photo and image printing, then inkjet printers will still be your best bet.
Do you need an all-in-one printer
All-in-one printers are handy as they allow you to scan, make copies, fax and print all with just one machine. The best part is that you can get all these functionalities at a very affordable price which is much cheaper than buying a printer, fax machine and scanner separately. All-in-one printers do take up a little more space, but most of them are pretty compact and are at most a little taller. They are also not much more expensive than standalone printers, usually you can get one for just a $50 to $100 top-up. If you foresee yourself needing the scan or fax functions more than a couple of times a year, we would say that going for an all-in-one printer is a smart choice.
Colour or black and white printer
Do you need colour printing or is black and white printing sufficient for you? The price difference the two of them is significant when you take into account the ink refill cost. Black and white printing will only cost you less than 5 cents per page easily. Colour printing will cost you 10 cents or more. Additionally, printers that print in only black and white are cheaper than colour printers. You’ll only need black ink cartridges instead of 4 different ink cartridges.
Wireless or wired printer
We recommend a printer that has wireless connectivity — being wireless means that you can connect to your printer through Bluetooth or WiFi. Through these networks, you can send print jobs over to your printer without the need for a USB cable. If you use a WiFi connection, you don’t even need to be near the printer, as long as both your printer and PC are on the same WiFi connection.
Wired printers are cheaper. They require you to connect a USB cable from your printer to your PC to send print jobs over. This option is more inconvenient, especially if there are multiple regular users for the printer.
What is the cost of ink replacement
Knowing the cost of ink replacement for each printer may save you a good chunk of money in the long run. Some printers follow the monetization rule of shavers. The initial cost of the printer may be very cheap. However, their ink refills may be very expensive. Thankfully, calculating the cost of ink replacements is not that hard. All you have to do is to take the price of the ink refill and divide it by the number of pages it can print. For black and white printing, a cost of less than 5 cents per page is good. For colour printing, anything below 10 cents is a good deal.
Are you a heavy or light user
Are you going to be printing hundreds of documents in a week? Or are you a very light user that will print just a couple of pages now and then? If you are a heavy user, we recommend that you go for more expensive models as they would be able to withstand higher loads. While you may be paying a higher upfront cost, a more expensive office-grade printer is more reliable and longer-lasting. When printing critical office documents, you do not want your printer to break down.
If you are a light user, go for a cheaper printer. It wouldn’t make sense for you to invest hundreds of dollars into a printer. We recommend a printer that costs less than $100 and at most $200.
