Things to consider when buying a sofa

Buying a sofa is a relatively big decision. A new sofa would likely be the centrepiece in your living room for years to go. Therefore it is important to put some thought to decide the best sofa for you and your family. Here are the factors which you should consider.

Types of sofas

There are many different types and styles of sofas that you can get. There are more than 20 options, but we are only going to go through the ones that are most popular in Singapore.

Armchair sofas: It is a sofa made for a single person, which is usually very comfortable and spacious. You can rest your arms on the side on the chair comfortably and lounge on it for hours.

Two / Three-seater sofas: These sofas are very common and can seat 2 or 3 people comfortably. It is perfect for a small family and fits nicely into most living rooms without taking up too much space.

Modular / L-shaped sofas: If you check out any furniture store, you’ll start to see more L-shaped sofas nowadays. They offer flexibility for you to customize the number of seats you want. Also, if you don’t mind squeezing a little, it can fit a family of 5 to 6 on it, especially if some of them are kids.

Sofa beds: Combining a sofa and a bed together is genius and saves a ton of space. The option is terrific if you have guests who crash at your house occasionally. If you want to know more about sofa beds – we have actually written about them here!

Types of sofa material

There are 4 main materials that are used for the exterior of the sofa. They can be classified into natural fabrics, synthetic fabrics, leather and faux leather. Each of them has pros and also cons and are more situated for different families. Here are some more information about the different materials so you can choose the right sofa.

Natural fabric: Common natural fabrics for sofa are usually cotton, linen or wool. These materials are very comfy and feel great to sit on. They are usually very affordable as well. The downside is that they can be quite easy to stain, which is a problem if you have small children.

Synthetic fabric: Some common synthetic fabric materials for sofas are polyester, nylon and microfiber – often they are blended together. Synthetic fabrics are more durable than natural fabrics. They look almost similar to natural fabrics. They are also cheaper than natural fabrics which make them an excellent choice for a budget-friendly sofa. However, they also stain easily, which makes them less suitable for families with young kids.

Leather: Leather sofas are very luxurious looking which also means that they are the most expensive too. Real leather is very durable and can last for many years. So, in a sense, you are paying for a sofa that will last you longer. The downside is that leather can feel very hot especially in the heat of Singapore. It would work better if you keep on your aircon on regularly. Otherwise, it may not be the right choice for our humid climate.

Faux leather: Sofas made of faux leather are increasingly popular. You get the luxurious look of a leather sofa at a much more reasonable price. Popular materials include PVC and polyurethane. The downside is the faux leather is not as durable and lasting as real leather. You will probably need to replace it much sooner than a real leather sofa. However, the savings you get makes it worth it.

Will the sofa fit in your home

Before committing to a sofa, you need to make sure that it can fit in your home. You need to measure the amount of space that you have in your living room. After that, you should check the dimensions and specifications of the sofa to ensure that it fits within those limits. In general, most sofas in Singapore are relatively compact, so this shouldn’t be a big obstacle.

How many seaters do you need

Do you have a small or big family? Or do you have guests over all the time? All this information will decide the number of seats you need for your sofa. For most families, a 3-seater sofa with an L-shaped modular addon will be the most optimal choice. If you are just a pair of newlyweds, maybe a 2-seater sofa will be just right for you two to snuggle in. Since a sofa is going to last you for a few years, you should buy a sofa that has sufficient seats not only for now but for the future as well.
