Food processor vs blender
Both food processor and blender can reduce ingredients or produce into smaller bits, but one works better in some situations than the other. While it is possible that either one is able to double us as the other, there are some key differences between a food processor and a food blender.
Blenders are relatively powerful due to the momentum of the smaller blade. While the blades are not necessarily super sharp, they can blend up small quantities of produce efficiently and quickly. As the containers of blenders are relatively taller and high, this makes it more suitable for liquids, even as it gets agitated from the blending – and this reduces the potential spillage. So if you’re looking to create smoothies or a blended mixture that has a liquid consistency, you’d be better off using a food blender.
Food processors have a larger and sharper blade and thus can handle tough jobs like frozen and hard food items. They also come with interchangeable attachments and accessories, so you get to pull off all sorts of slicing or shredding or whipping tasks. Some food processors are even able to knead dough!
Stand vs hand blender
Chances are, you’ve probably seen a stand blender around in your house before. Stand blenders are a classic kitchen appliance that has been around circa way back.
Typically a stand blender comes with a jug-like or deep tumbler-esque container with blades at the bottom and starts when plopped on top of a base. Stand blenders are typically stronger as they come with a powerful motor. This means that you’d get smoother and a more consistent blended mixture under the same amount of time, as compared to a hand blender. On the flip side, these could take up more space on your countertop and even when storing.
Hand blenders – or stick or immersion (however they term it) are newer inventions for homes with less space and for people who prefer to have fewer things to wash. Simply boil the pumpkin in a pot, and once that’s done, you can use the hand blenders in the same pot to turn it into a puree. Fuss-free, straightforward and less cleaning required. However, the most significant limitation of a hand blender is its motor power. It’d probably struggle a lot and can’t even work if you want to grind ice or harder uncooked vegetables.
What can you use a blender for?
Blenders are best used for mixtures that have a higher liquid component because they’re equipped with the deep pitcher or container. But you don’t only use a blender to make smoothies or milkshakes. You’d be surprised to know that the possibilities are endless. With a blender, you can even start preparing dishes that could even get Gordon Ramsay’s endorsement. (Think about that smooth puree!)
Sauces
One of the best things you can make in a blender is sauces. If you simply want to recreate your favourite brunch dish like Egg Benedict, you can actually use the blender to whip up a sick Hollandaise sauce. Feel like making your own pizza sauce, rather than get those canned ones? It just takes tomatoes, basil, garlic, thyme, pepper and blend away!
Nut butter
If you think commercially made peanut butter – or any spread – are too sweet and contain too many preservatives, you can use a blender to blend up peanuts or almond and create your very own homemade nut butter.
Puree
Purees are the result of blending until you get a creamy paste consistency. You can just boil your cauliflower and blend away. Feel like it’s Mediterranean cook night? Just boil the chickpeas, blend away and you get hummus to go with freshly warmed pita bread. You can even make your own Applesauce to go with pancakes or breads.
Pancake, waffle and quick bread batter
We kept the best for the last. Pancake and waffle batter! Just toss in the flour, baking powder and water, switch the blender on and you get a smooth mix – almost instantly. You can even pour the batter straight out from the glass pitcher. That being said, you can also easily prepare quick bread dough, like a chocolate banana bread or a healthier option like zucchini bread.
How to clean and take care of your blender?
Blenders may look somewhat intimidating. The jug or pitcher is usually tall, and at the bottom there lie those jagged blades. It may be a scary thought to stick your hand in to scrub down. Using those brushes with a stick may seem like a good idea, but the brush just can’t seem to get to the nooks and crannies to clean the blender well.
There is a simpler solution. And all it takes is 30 seconds. Simply fill half of the blender jug or pitcher with warm water, pump in some dish soap, plop it back and switch it on. Leave it for about 10 seconds, empty the water, and wash thoroughly with water again. And you’re done!
If you notice the blades aren’t as shiny as they were when you first bought the blender, you can even put some baking soda at the same time as the dish soap. You’d be amazed at how easy it takes to make your food blender look like brand new again.
Don’t forget to wash the lid and the jar base if there is one. Use warm soap water and rinse them thoroughly. It is also good to leave it out to air and dry, or simply just wipe them dry with a towel.
Always remember to switch off the power and unplug the blender before you clean the base. Never place the motor housing in water, nor put it in the dishwasher. This will essentially damage the motor. What you can do is wet a cloth and wipe it down gently. You should also wipe the cord.
Blender and smoothies
Ideally, you’d want to get a blender with a sufficiently powerful motor so that you can blend ice cubes, frozen fruits, nuts and even seeds in the mix for more variety. This is about at least 600 power watts. While technically, even the weakest motor may be able to blend harder produce, it may force the blender to work harder ,and the blender may not last as long as you’d like it to.
Once you’ve got a suitable blender, how simple or how complicated you want the smoothie to be is all up to your own creativity. You could get prepackaged frozen smoothie fruit mixes from the supermarkets, and simply dump in one serving worth into your blender. However, if you prefer to use fresh ingredients, just remember that it’s better if you cut them up into 1-inch pieces for a smoother consistency and shorter blending time.
To make things easier for your blender, a general rule of thumb is to place the liquid in first, followed by the softer ingredients and end with the hardest last (usually the ice cubes). Make use of the blend or pulse options to nail that perfect consistency that you desire.
Best blender recipes to try
Apple Vanilla Greek Yogurt Pancakes
What better way to wake up to than pancakes! This is a relatively healthy and lower-calorie pancake recipe with yoghurt and rolled oats. And compared to the classic pancakes, they’re slightly denser, more like a cake! Simply just put all the ingredients into the blender and you’d get a smooth consistency in no time.
Acai berries are known as superfruits as they’re packed with loads of antioxidants – and these are good for your brain and heart. Rather than spend $10 on an acai bowl, you can recreate it yourself right at home with a blender! And the best is you can choose to pair it with whatever toppings you like and the desired portion!
Hummus
It’s rare to find good hummus in our local supermarkets – and those that are decent cost a whopping $5 for a small portion. Simply boil up some chickpeas and set your blender to perform the magic. We guarantee it’d be as creamy and as smooth as the ones at your favourite Mediterranean restaurant.
Once more, here are our top recommendations. Get any one of them and you will not be disappointed!
