Not to worry, we have done the hard work of research for you. Here are the 7 best VPNs you can get for Singapore today!
Best Cheap VPN for Singapore
- One of the cheapest VPNs in the world
- Works with Netflix
- Connect up to 6 devices at one time
- Secure and fast connection that ensures 100% privacy
Speeds and performance
NordVPN is among one of the most consistent and speedy VPN providers in the world. Regardless of which server in any country that you connect to, you’ll find seamless connectivity that is fast enough for heavy usage that includes streaming and torrenting. So far in our tests through Speedtest and real-life usage, NordVPN has impressed us each and every time. Here is one of our Speedtest Results while connected through NordVPN’s Singapore servers.
One reason for their impeccable performance is their large number of servers. You will never find their servers too overloaded as they ensure sufficient bandwidth for their entire customer base. Good bandwidth combined with Singapore’s fast broadband means you will never face any lag while using NordVPN.
All these unlimited speeds and bandwidth for only US$3.49 per month!
NordVPN countries and servers
With more than 5225 servers in 62 countries and counting, you have a buffet of VPN options to choose from. They have 442 servers in the Asia-Pacific region with 53 in Singapore alone. In the Americas, 2320 servers cover the United States, Canada and even Costa Rica. If you need a European connection, there are a total of 2410 servers from the United Kingdom, Germany, Sweden and many more. There are even 61 servers in Africa and the Middle East if you need.
NordVPN has one of the most comprehensive servers and country coverages among all the other VPNs. What is impressive is that they are among one of the most affordable options at US$3.49 / month as well.
There are 4 different pricing options that you can choose from. The most value-for-money option is to get the 3-year plan that costs US$3.49 per month. It adds up to a total of US$125.04 for the entire 3 years.
The second option would be to get the 2-year plan that costs a total of US$119.75 for the entire contract period. That averages out to be US$4.99 per month. A dollar more per month than the 3-year plan.
There is also a 1-year plan option that averages out to US$6.99 per month. If you don’t like contracts, there is also a monthly option that is US$11.95 per month.
Our recommendation is to go for the 3-year plan for US$3.49 per month. That saves you up to 70% and makes it super good deal!
If you are unhappy with NordVPN and would like to refund, you can request one within 30 days. However do take note that if you have used a gift card for the purchase, you will not be able to get a refund. Also, if you purchased NordVPN through the App Store, you must approach Apple for a refund instead.
While the refund policy may not be the best, it will work fine if you use a credit card for payment. Also, with NordVPN’s consistent performance, you are unlikely to need a refund.
NordVPN has a strict no-logging policy that is proudly displayed on their terms of service. In fact, their claims of no-logging have been independently verified by a Big Four accounting firm. Your IP addresses are never tracked and whatever you do online is 100% private.
Support and customer service
If you ever encounter any problems or have any questions, NordVPN’s support is just one-click away. You can use the live chat function on their website to start a chat with their friendly customer support agents. On average, you should get a response within minutes, sometimes seconds.
You can also submit a support ticket. Their email responses are very fast. No matter what problem you are facing, it’ll be solved by their support and technical agents. This is a huge plus point that gives you high confidence in their service.
Good for torrenting and Netflix
Yes, NordVPN will allow you to torrent at high speeds with unlimited bandwidth. It can also help you to evade the geo-block restrictions of streaming services. You can Netflix and chill all day long.
The final verdict on NordVPN
It is simply the best choice for a VPN if you are living in Singapore. It is fast, secure and wallet-friendly. Get their 3-year deal now and save 70% immediately!
- Very affordable option at $1.99/month
- Servers in more than 100 locations
- Connect up to 5 devices at one time
- Access Netflix and other streaming services
Ivacy VPN is headquartered in Singapore and offers one of the most affordable VPN plans in the market. Their two-year plan costs just $1.99 per month which is less than half of its competitors. If you go for their 2-year plan, there is a 30-day money-back guarantee so you can have a peace of mind to try it out. We wouldn’t recommend their monthly plan because it costs $9.99 per month which covers 5 months with a 2-year plan.
The key selling point of Ivacy is their ability to bypass geo-locked content on streaming sites such as Netflix. Ivacy servers are located in 100 different countries, with a total of 275 servers and 12000 IP addresses. Speeds do vary depending on which server you choose but for popular VPN locations like US and UK, connectivity is good. With one subscription you can connect up to 5 different devices which makes its low price even more attractive.
Ivacy also does not keep any logs of your visits and traffic as you use their servers. There is also a kill-switch built into their app, which stops your entire Internet connection if a leak is detected. Your privacy, data and security are well-protected once you connect to Ivacy VPN.
- Up to 10 connections at one time
- Good speed performance for Singapore users
- Excellent privacy features with zero logging
- No cap on bandwidths
High simultaneous connections
If you have many devices that need a VPN connection, then IPVanish would be an excellent choice. You can use it with up to 10 different connections simultaneously. That way, you don’t have to compromise on security and privacy just because you don’t have sufficient VPN accounts.
The key point of any safe VPN service is a no-log policy which IPVanish follows religiously. That means none of your activity online is tracked and kept. The only time when they keep data is when you sign up for the service. Other than that, none of your Internet adventures will be logged.
Good speed and performance
The speeds and performances of IPVanish VPN are good regardless of which of the 1000 servers you choose from. These servers are spread over 60 countries with 18 servers in Singapore alone. You won’t need to worry about there being slow speeds as bandwidth is always readily available with such a wide array of servers. In terms of speeds, we found that there was only a 20 to 30 per cent drop in speeds when connected to IPVanish. While this may sound significant, it is actually a very good performance. You can download at very fast speeds and even watch 4K videos on YouTube with zero lag while on this VPN.
Secure protection and kill-switch
We are also impressed with the robust encryption protocol (AES-256) used by IPVanish. Government and security agencies typically use this level of protocol. With your connection protected by this AES-256 protocol, you can breathe easy even as the world undergoes more and more hacking attacks.
The IPVanish app is also built with a kill-switch which you can choose to keep on or off. If turned on, the kill switch will disconnect you from the Internet if there is a disconnection in the VPN. This adds another layer of security and privacy. If you are very concerned about your privacy, we recommend that you use the kill-switch feature.
The final verdict on IPVanish VPN
In general, the IPVanish VPN service is definitely one you should consider as it does everything you need in a VPN. However, one downside is the lack of good customer support. There isn’t a live chat function, and if you face a problem, you can only send a support ticket. Based on other customers’ reviews, a reply may take up to a day or two. So if you need fast support, IPVanish VPN may not be for you. For good support and fast speeds at a low price, get NordVPN instead.
Best free VPN in Singapore
- Free 10 GB bandwidth
- One of the cheapest VPN plans
- Strong privacy with no IP leaks
- Payment options of Bitcoin, Paypal or Credit Card
A wallet-friendly alternative
If you are on a budget and don’t need too much bandwidth, Windscribe is a godsend. It costs $0 if you use less than 10 GB. This plan is good if you only surf websites and don’t use the VPN for media consumption such as watching YouTube videos or downloading large files. If you plan to use your VPN daily, then the free plan may not be sufficient for you. In that case, you can get their monthly plan which costs $4.08 per month when paid yearly ($49 USD). Now, let’s explore if it’s worth paying for Windscribe.
Good privacy and security
When we look at the privacy and security of each connection through Windscribe, we are impressed with it. For a freemium service, they offer the best in VPN protocols that are usually only used by paid services. Additionally, Windscribe does not keep logs so they do not track every click you make on the Internet. The only thing they track is the amount of bandwidth you use if you are on a limited bandwidth plan.
Torrenting is allowed
If you are wondering if you can torrent with Windscribe – yes you can. Torrenting in itself is not illegal unless you download copyrighted material. So, do take note of that. However, with a free Windscribe plan that only offers 10 GB, it will likely be insufficient if you are planning to torrent.
Unlimited number of devices
Another plus point of Windscribe is that you can connect an unlimited number of devices to your account. It supports devices and software such as Windows, Mac, Linux, Chrome, Firefox and even streaming devices like the Nvidia Shield. You just have to download the Windscribe app, login and you’ll be up and running in no time.
Speeds are not great tho
So far, Windscribe sounds perfect especially since it has a free option as well. However, there are several cons you have to consider. Firstly, do not expect blazing fast speeds on Windscribe servers. Compared to other VPN servers, Windscribe is pretty slow which is a con especially if you want to stream high-quality videos.
Fewer servers than other paid alternatives
Secondly, the number of Windscribe servers are much fewer than their competitors. They have about 480 servers in 50 countries. However, their competitors have more than twice or even five times the number of servers. In Singapore, there are only two servers to choose from – decent but not great.
Lastly, their support isn’t fantastic as well. There is a live chat, but it seems like it is supported by AI-robots. Sometimes, the answers they provide aren’t relevant to what you are asking – which can get pretty frustrating if you are facing a problem with the service.
The final verdict on Windscribe
In conclusion, Windscribe is a good free alternative. But it is quite limiting in terms of bandwidth. If you want to go for a paid premium VPN service, we would not recommend Windscribe. Instead, NordVPN would be our top recommendation.
- Fast speeds no matter what servers you use
- Good encryption protocol, security and privacy
- Works with streaming video services
- Responsive 24/7 live chat support
- 30 days money-back guarantee
ExpressVPN is one of the best VPN services these days. Once you try their service, it is hard to change to another VPN provider because they are so darn good at what they do. Let’s see what they offer that makes them so popular among VPN users.
Excellent connection speeds
Firstly, when you connect to an ExpressVPN server, you will hardly know that you are routed through a VPN. That is because the connection speed is so fast that you won’t feel your speeds dropping at all. With other VPN services, you often see a 30 to 50% drop, but with ExpressVPN, we only noticed a 10-20% drop which is negligible. Whether you are surfing, streaming or torrenting, you will experience amazing performance.
Even if you are new to VPNs, you’ll get used to using it quickly with the user-friendly ExpressVPN interface. Turning on the VPN is as simple as clicking the large power button which automatically connects you to the best-recommended server. You don’t need to manually choose a country and server if you don’t want to. Additionally, ExpressVPN is available on almost any Internet-connected device from computer, laptops and phones. You can be protected by a VPN all the time with ExpressVPN.
Secure protection for absolute privacy
Your privacy is protected well through secure encryption, security and also by ExpressVPN being located in the British Virgin Islands. All the data passing through ExpressVPN servers are encrypted under top-notch encryption standards. You can also choose to enable the “kill switch” feature which will disconnect you Internet connection if your VPN connection is unstable (which is very rare with ExpressVPN). Additionally, ExpressVPN is registered in a country which takes privacy very seriously. Companies in the British Virgin Islands are not required to give up records on their customers even in court. Your privacy is absolutely protected once you turn on your ExpressVPN connection.
Proven no-log policy
Another level of safety is that ExpressVPN does not ever keep logs on their customers. Your IP address, browsing history, metadata, DNS queries are all private and are never kept on record. In fact, there was a case in Turkey where ExpressVPN was asked for logs on their customers. They replied that they did not keep any logs and thus could not produce such logs to the Turkish authorities. With this real-world example of their no-log policy, it really shows that they do what they set out to do.
Works with streaming services like Netflix
If you want a VPN for your Netflix binging, then ExpressVPN is the one you want. If you read reviews online, ExpressVPN is the only VPN that consistently works with Netflix. Other VPNs don’t work at all or only works when you choose certain servers. Additionally, if you face any problem with Netflix on ExpressVPN, you can contact their 24/7 support for a fast solution. With the fast connectivity, you can watch shows in Ultra HD on Netflix with zero lag as well.
The final verdict on ExpressVPN
So far, it seems that ExpressVPN is amazing. However, there is one con. This reliable service is more expensive than most of its competitors. You can expect to pay about 1.5 times the price compared to services like NordVPN. However, if you want excellent performance, it is definitely worth paying the small premium.
- Secure connection that has reliable privacy protocols
- Up to 7 consecutive connections
- Quick and fast live chat support
- Low price comparable to NordVPN
Honestly, CyberGhost is a mixed bag of positives and negatives. There are many things which we want to praise them for. But there are also aspects which make them a poorer choice compared to the other top VPNs in Singapore. Let’s first look at the positives and then the negatives.
Decent privacy and security
In terms of privacy and security, CyberGhost is good at it. All the data passing through their server are encrypted. Also, they have a strict no-log policy which means everything that you do on the Internet will not be tracked and kept on record. Your IP address is also protected and will not be leaked as you will be hidden under their IP proxies.
Torrenting and Netflix are allowed
CyberGhost can also be used to torrent and Netflix. They have specific servers which have dynamic IPs to allow you to Netflix and bypass the geofencing boundaries. In terms of torrenting, they have secured servers which keep your privacy intact. However, do consider that torrenting copyrighted materials in Singapore is illegal.
Good user experience
For user experience with the CyberGhost app, we would give it a 10 out of 10. It is easy to use even if you are a first-timer. Another plus point is that you can connect up to 7 devices with a single account through the app, which helps you save more money. Additionally, if you face any issues with the app, you can contact their live support which is very responsive and helpful.
Slow speeds that are sometimes frustrating
Now for the one negative that make us love CyberGhost a little less. Firstly, the speeds and performances of their VPN servers are not fast. While this will not impact you if you are only surfing the net, it has a big impact if you are gaming, streaming and downloading a large file. Its speeds are not comparable to other paid VPN services. Their prices may be as cheap as NordVPN, but their speeds are far from it. So, if you want a fast and cheap VPN service, we would still recommend that you stick with the reliable NordVPN.
- Blazing fast speeds on every server
- Good IP protection and privacy
- Chameleon technology useful for countries like China
VyprVPN used to be further down the list because they didn’t have a zero-log policy. However, this has changed as they have embraced the no-logging policy to ensure better protection and privacy for their clients. Now, they are a VPN that we can recommend.
Good speeds on every server
If you are looking for fast speeds, then VyprVPN is good for that. Whether you are connecting to a server in Asia, the United States or Europe, you can expect fast and uninterrupted speeds. This is useful especially if you are downloading a big file or just watching a 4K YouTube video.
Works on a wide range of devices
VyprVPN also works on many devices and platforms. Here is a list of things that work with it without any problem – Windows, Android, Router, Mac, iOS, QNAP, Blackphone, TV, Anonabox, DD-WRT, OpenWRT, ASUSWRT, Boxee, Synology NAS, Blackberry. It is unlikely you will find a device which cannot connect to VyprVPN.
Good for countries like China
Another thing we like about VyprVPN is its Chameleon technology. In some countries (eg. China and Russia), they will detect that you are using a VPN and stop that connection. With the Chameleon technology, it hides the fact that you are using a VPN so you can surf the Internet without getting blocked. Do note that the basic plan does not include this feature – you will have to get the premium plan which costs $5 per month compared to usual $3.75 price.
The final verdict on VyperVPN
Everything considered VyprVPN is a good alternative especially if you need the Chameleon technology. However, if you are only considering the basic plan, we would recommend NordVPN over it.
- Decent download speeds
- Up to 5 simultaneous connections
- Very cheap, especially on a 3-year plan
Cheapest premium VPN
If you don’t mind getting tied down to a longer contract for a cheaper price, then consider SaferVPN. When you choose the 3-year plan, the price goes down to as low as $2.50 per month. That is really probably the cheapest plan out there. However, do we recommend it over NordVPN? The answer is no. While it is $0.49 cheaper than NordVPN 3-year plan, it is just not as good for Singapore users in terms of speeds and also privacy. Let’s delve more into why.
Average and sometimes slow speeds
Firstly, its speeds while decent, are not better than NordVPN, especially when looking at Singapore servers. The $0.49 monthly saving is just not enough to sway us from a decrease in speed performance. In the long run, it just isn’t worth it to get frustrated over slow speeds just for such a small saving.
Questionable zero-log policy
Secondly, SaferVPN does not say that they have a zero-log policy. Rather, they state that they collect minimal information on their users. To us, that is not sufficient for the protection of our privacy. While they may not share the information with other parties, there is still a risk whenever our browsing information is kept. For this reason alone, we would rather not save the $0.49 and go for the no-log NordVPN.
The final verdict on SaferVPN
In terms of daily performance, SaferVPN isn’t that bad. But it is just not good enough when compared to a similar-priced alternative which better-rated and performs better on many more aspects. As such if you are considering SaferVPN, we would recommend NordVPN over them.

Is using a VPN illegal in Singapore?
Currently, using a VPN is legal in Singapore (16 Jan 2019). We will try to update this article when the laws outrightly state that VPNs are illegal. However, do keep up with the latest news if we are unable to amend this article in time.
In 2016, the Ministry of Law and Intellectual Property Office of Singapore held a public discussion on the issue of VPNs and copyright. No outright conclusion has come out of it. It is still okay to use a VPN. However, using a VPN does not mean whatever you do is legal. Downloading a copyrighted movie is still an illegal offence that violates the Copyright Act.
Why do I need a VPN?
For personal privacy
Almost every website that you have ever visited has kept track of you in some way or another. Every time you do something online, a website or app gets more information about who you are and what you like. Things like your age, name, date of birth, celebrities you like and many more are all information that is no longer private.
WIth a secured VPN, you no longer go online as yourself. Instead, you are a faceless mask whose information is private. If you value your privacy, a VPN is a must-have for every time you go online. (which is probably every single day)
Keep your Google searches private
Have you ever searched for something (eg. flights to Bali) and for the next few weeks, get bombarded by hundreds of different text and display ads from airlines that fly to Bali? That is no coincidence. If you hate getting targeted ads like this, a VPN will help you keep anything you do online, a private affair. The next time you search for something, keep Google out of it with a VPN.
Use the Internet safely on public WiFi networks
When we are out and about, our laptops and phones often connect to public WiFi. In Singapore, the most popular and free public WiFi would be Wireless@SG. Beyond that, every cafe, restaurant and shopping mall you go to will likely offer WiFi as a value-added service. However, these free public WiFi offerings may not be as secure as you think.
There are several risks of using a public WiFi network which can be mitigated with a good VPN provider. The first risk is that the hotspot you are connected to may not be legitimate and could be set up to steal your private information. Secondly, malicious WiFi networks can spread malware on your devices which will lead to a loss of privacy. Even if the WiFi network is legit, it could be susceptible to a “man-in-the-middle” attack. This all sounds very scary. But don’t worry, you can continue to safely use public WiFi networks, just use a VPN.
Access geo-blocked content
A great example is Netflix. If you’re a subscriber to Netflix in Singapore, you will notice that are less shows available than on Netflix US. That is because Netflix shows a different range of shows to different countries and geographical regions. Another example that you may have encountered is on YouTube. You have likely seen an error message “The uploader has not made this video available in your country”.
With a VPN, you’ll be able to access such content. The VPN can route your connection through a country that is not geo-blocked. Geo-fencing will no longer limit you from enjoying the content that you want to watch. A VPN can route your connection through a completely different country.
Save money on cheaper flights
Did you know that airlines may charge different prices depending on which country your booking comes from? With a VPN, you can “pretend” that you are booking from another country. For example, if you are travelling from Singapore to South Korea, try booking your flights with a VPN connected to Korea. What you could potentially save will make your VPN subscription entirely worth it! Do it a few times and you’ll wish that you knew this travel hack earlier.
Torrent and VPN
Torrenting is not illegal. However, torrenting copyrighted content is illegal and you may be liable to criminal and civil charges. When you are downloading and uploading a torrent using your Internet Service Provider (ISP), it is very easy to track and know who you are. With a VPN, you are download from one of their servers so it is harder to find out who you are. That being said, we have to make it clear once more that torrenting copyrighted material is inherently illegal. Using a VPN does not make it legal.
Should you use a free VPN?
No. On the surface, a free VPN may sound good. However, there are many potential pitfalls from using a free VPN. In the online world, there a saying that if something is free, then you are most likely the product. Let’s take a look at some reasons why you should stay away from using a free VPN.
Lack of privacy
As you are the product, up to 90% of free VPNs closely track what you are doing online. They know what websites you visit, how much time you spend on each site and can get snippets of your personal information very easily. They monetise all your personal data by selling them to third party companies who want to market to you. Additionally, your activity is often logged and kept for long periods of time. You’ll totally lose the anonymity that a paid VPN offers.
Because these VPNs keep logs of all your activity, that means when someone requests your data from them, it is all readily available. And they will likely share it. So if your primary reason for using a VPN is to maintain your privacy online, a free VPN is a BIG nono.
Stealing your bandwidth
If you find that your internet speeds slow considerably, your Free VPN provider may be taking and selling your bandwidth. They could be using your network as a server for routing other computers. It could slow your connection to a crawling speed even when you have fibre Internet.
You may not feel the impact of reduced bandwidth in Singapore because we have unlimited bandwidth for most Internet plans. However, video streaming and playing online games will greatly suffer as your speeds are completely drained.
Limited bandwidth and low speeds
You are unlikely to find a reputable VPN company who offers unlimited bandwidth and high speeds. Bandwidth costs a lot of money. Since you are not a paying customer, it does not make monetary sense for them to support a heavy user. You will unlikely be able to stream large files such as videos on a regular basis.
Even if bandwidth offered is high, the low upload and download speeds will mean that high-quality video will not play smoothly. You will not be able to watch YouTube or Netflix in high-definition. In fact, more than 60% of free VPNs will not allow you to stream or torrent in any form. So you will be limited to surfing the web, which is pretty useless for a VPN.
Malware and viruses
There is a high chance that a free VPN will inject malware and viruses into your computer or phone. Malware and viruses sound scary, and rightly so. They can steal your data, delete information and keep track of every single click you make on the Internet.
A good way to avoid free VPNs with malware is to go for only trusted brands that have been around for years. Watch out especially for those new VPNs that pop up on the App Store or Play Store. If it is not developed by a recognized brand, avoid it at all costs.
Fraud and monetary loss
With malware injected into your computer, all your sensitive personal information is no longer safe. There have been cases where credit card and bank information have been stolen which resulted in a monetary loss. In the end, these potential losses far outweigh any potential savings from choosing a free VPN over a paid one.
Will a VPN make my Internet slow?
In general, your speeds may see a decrease. However, in the context of the high-speed fibre broadband in Singapore, you are unlikely to see a noticeable speed decrease. (if you use a good VPN) There are a few factors that will determine your Internet speed after connecting through a VPN.
The first factor is how far away are you from the VPN server you have chosen. Let’s say you are connecting to a server in Singapore, from Singapore. Speeds will be fast because the distance between the server and your location is very close. Conversely, if you connect to a server in the United States, your speeds will decrease. However, given the fast average speeds of a Singapore connection, you should still be able to stream video with no issue.
The second factor is whether the VPN server is overloaded. The higher the server load, the slower the speeds as there is less available bandwidth for you to use.
